Several CPI(M) Offices Vandalised in Howrah’s Bali, BJP Denies Involvement

Several offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were allegedly vandalised by miscreants in the Bali area of West Bengal’s Howrah district late Tuesday night, party leaders said on Wednesday.

The CPI(M) alleged that members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party were behind the attacks, a charge rejected by the BJP, which said it had no involvement in the incident.

CPI(M) leaders said the party’s Dewangazi Zonal office on Panchanantala Road and another office on Belur Station Road were vandalised. Several other party offices in the area were also allegedly ransacked.

According to a CPI(M) leader, a group of people arrived on motorcycles at around 11 p.m. and carried out the attacks for nearly 45 minutes.

The incident occurred hours after a programme organised by the party’s youth wing, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), at Panchanantala near the Bali Canal. CPI(M) leader Dipsita Dhar and other party members attended the programme.

Party leaders said tension developed after the event, followed by the alleged attacks on the offices later in the night.

CPI(M) district committee member Shankar Maitra alleged that local BJP leaders arrived on motorcycles and vandalised four party offices, besides locking one of them.

He also alleged that police failed to take action despite the party submitting a complaint soon after the incident.

The BJP denied the allegations. BJP leader Raja Goswami said party workers were occupied with Ganesh Puja and the distribution of khichdi before attending a Yuva Morcha programme at Howrah station.

“I came to know about the attack on the Left party’s offices from the media. BJP has no connection with this,” Goswami said.

The latest incident comes days after a CPI(M) office in Jalpaiguri in north Bengal was allegedly vandalised and set on fire.

The CPI(M) had alleged that people affiliated with the BJP attacked its district office on DBC Road in Jalpaiguri, vandalised the gate with sticks and allegedly set a fire outside the premises.

The party subsequently submitted a written complaint to the police regarding the Jalpaiguri incident.
