Three people were killed and another was hospitalised after a news helicopter crashed in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, on Tuesday evening while covering a separate deadly collision involving an SUV and a Metro bus nearby.
The helicopter went down shortly before 7 p.m. in the 9100 block of North Mason Avenue, between two commercial buildings, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said. NBC Los Angeles later confirmed that the aircraft was its news helicopter, which was providing aerial coverage of the earlier crash.
The aircraft appeared to have landed on two shipping containers and several vehicles parked at the site. The crash triggered a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers before firefighters extinguished the flames.
LAFD said three people were killed in the helicopter crash, while another person was taken to a hospital. The condition of the hospitalised person was not immediately known. Authorities had not released the identities or details about the victims.
Several television news helicopters were in the area covering the earlier Chatsworth collision when the aircraft went down. The separate SUV-Metro bus crash, reported shortly after 5 p.m., had killed two people and left at least six others hospitalised, according to local authorities.
The cause of the helicopter crash remains unclear. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident.
