Security forces and law enforcement agencies have seized methamphetamine tablets worth more than Rs 425 crore in three separate operations in Assam and Tripura and arrested three alleged drug peddlers, officials said on Wednesday.
In the biggest seizure, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), recovered 109.200 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 327 crore from the Ramnathpur area of Assam’s Hailakandi district.
Acting on specific intelligence, a joint Assam Rifles-DRI team conducted the operation between Tuesday and Wednesday and seized 546 packets containing the contraband.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of two trucks, a mobile phone, an Aadhaar card and a driving licence. One alleged drug peddler was arrested.
The seized drugs, vehicles and other items, along with the arrested person, were handed over to the DRI, Silchar, for further investigation and legal action, a defence spokesman said.
In two separate operations in Tripura, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the DRI and Tripura Police, seized 12,26,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 98.08 crore from Khowai and North Tripura districts on Tuesday night.
The first operation was conducted in the Khowai Choawmani area, where the Assam Rifles and DRI recovered 7,26,000 tablets worth around Rs 58.08 crore. A person from Itakhola in Assam’s Sonitpur district was apprehended, and a suspected truck used for transporting the consignment was seized.
In the second operation, the Assam Rifles and Tripura Police recovered 5,00,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 40 crore from Panisagar in North Tripura district. Another alleged drug peddler, a resident of Nagrmari in Assam’s Morigaon district, was apprehended along with a truck.
Officials said the operations were based on intelligence inputs from the Assam Rifles Field Intelligence Unit and other sources. The arrested persons, seized contraband and vehicles were handed over to the concerned authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.
The seizures highlight the ongoing efforts of security and enforcement agencies to disrupt inter-state narcotics trafficking networks operating through the Northeast, officials said.
According to officials, the seized consignments are suspected to have been smuggled from Myanmar and are believed to have entered Assam and Tripura through Mizoram for onward trafficking to neighbouring Bangladesh or other destinations.
Methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or “party” tablets, contain methamphetamine and caffeine and are highly addictive. They are widely abused in Bangladesh and neighbouring countries, as well as in India.
Officials said Mizoram and Manipur have emerged as major drug-trafficking corridors in the Northeast due to their long and porous international borders with Myanmar and proximity to the Golden Triangle, a major illicit narcotics-producing region.
Six districts of Mizoram and five districts of Manipur share around 910 km of unfenced international border with Myanmar.
