Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder and Bankipur MLA Prashant Kishor on Tuesday questioned the Bihar government’s response to the alleged molestation and harassment of a minor girl in Jamui, arguing that greater attention appeared to be focused on social media accounts that circulated the incident’s video than on those allegedly responsible for the crime.
Kishor condemned the incident and said the alleged involvement of people who took it upon themselves to act as “moral police” reflected, in his view, a breakdown of fear of law enforcement.
The incident came to light after a video began circulating on social media on Sunday evening. The district administration subsequently contacted the victim’s family and a case was registered.
Kishor questioned why the incident had not come to the attention of the authorities earlier and argued that it was the circulation of the video that brought the matter to public notice.
Police have registered FIRs against operators of 120 social media profiles across multiple platforms over alleged violations linked to the circulation of the video and disclosure of information that could identify the minor victim.
Questioning the action, Kishor asked why those who allegedly committed the offence should not face comparable scrutiny. He also criticised the state government’s handling of law and order and referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign while making a political remark about the government’s response.
Meanwhile, Jamui police arrested Nandan Yadav, identified by investigators as the alleged prime accused, following an encounter in which he sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment, officials said.
Police said Yadav was identified from the video and was allegedly the person seen wearing a red gamchha.
Police have also arrested Ramashish Chaudhary for allegedly circulating the video. Five people, including three juveniles, have now been taken into custody in connection with the case.
The investigation is continuing, with police examining the alleged involvement of other individuals and the circumstances surrounding the recording and dissemination of the video.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred late on Saturday evening in the Madwa Pahar area of Jamui district, where the minor girl was allegedly stopped and molested by a group of youths while returning from the area. A male student accompanying her was also allegedly assaulted.
The allegations are subject to investigation and further legal proceedings.
