The Congress on Monday welcomed a special MP-MLA court’s decision to acquit Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in a 2018 defamation case linked to his remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the verdict had reaffirmed its faith in the judiciary.
Congress leader Aradhana Misra Mona described the ruling as a victory for the judicial system, saying the party had always trusted the courts.
Congress MP Karamvir Singh Boudh also welcomed the decision, linking it to the party’s stated commitment to protecting the Constitution. He alleged that cases were sometimes filed against Opposition leaders to obstruct their political work and expressed confidence that other cases would also be dismissed.
“Truth will certainly prevail,” Boudh said, adding that the Congress would continue advocating brotherhood and constitutional values.
Congress MLC Deepak Singh claimed the case was part of the BJP’s alleged attempts to harass Gandhi through legal proceedings. He said the party would continue raising issues concerning what it described as the BJP’s double standards, including the handling of the Sangeeta Bhandari murder case.
Samajwadi Party leader S.T. Hasan also criticised the tendency to pursue cases against political opponents, arguing that personal animosity had increasingly overshadowed political differences. He said the court had delivered justice by distinguishing truth from falsehood.
However, complainant and BJP leader Vijay Mishra said he would consider challenging the verdict. He told reporters that he would first obtain a certified copy of the judgment, examine it with his advocate and seek legal advice before approaching the appellate court.
The proposed appeal could lead to further legal proceedings in the defamation dispute.
