National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has drawn criticism from Muslim clerics over his recent remarks on Jammu and Kashmir, with religious leaders questioning his comments about Pakistan’s role in raising the Kashmir issue internationally.
The controversy erupted after Abdullah, speaking at a party workers’ convention in Baramulla on Saturday, questioned the Centre’s position on Kashmir and suggested that Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts were helping bring the issue to global attention. His remarks had already prompted criticism from BJP leaders, who demanded an apology.
Maulana Sajid Rashidi, president of the All India Imam Association, strongly condemned the comments and accused Abdullah of making statements that, in his view, amounted to treason.
Rashidi cited Pakistan’s alleged involvement in terror attacks in India, referring to the Pahalgam attack, the Pulwama bombing and the Kargil War. He argued that Pakistan’s record made it inappropriate to credit the neighbouring country with protecting Kashmiris.
Other Muslim scholars, including Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali and Maulana Saif Abbas, also expressed displeasure over Abdullah’s remarks. They questioned the appropriateness of relying on another country when discussing Jammu and Kashmir’s security.
Firangi Mahali called on the National Conference leader to provide a detailed explanation and apologise, describing the remarks as unacceptable and objectionable.
Abdullah’s comments have triggered a wider political debate, with BJP leaders criticising his position and religious figures also raising concerns. The National Conference leader’s remarks about Pakistan and the Kashmir issue have become the focus of renewed scrutiny amid continuing political differences over the region’s status and security.
The criticism from the clerics reflects the controversy surrounding Abdullah’s comments, while the demand for an apology has added to the pressure on the veteran politician.
