Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been released from the squad for the ongoing ODI tri-series against England and Sri Lanka at his request, as he looks to regain form and confidence through domestic cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Monday.
Ayub has struggled for runs in the tournament, registering three consecutive single-digit scores in as many matches. Following discussions with the head coach, the left-handed batter requested permission to return to domestic cricket and work on his batting.
“Respecting Saim’s decision and appreciating his honest assessment of his current form, the team management and national selection committee have mutually agreed to accept this request,” the PCB said in a statement.
Pakistan have named Sahibzada Farhan as Ayub’s replacement for the remainder of the series. Farhan, who was recently appointed Pakistan’s T20I captain, was not part of the original squad.
Pakistan have already secured a place in the final after winning all three of their matches, making them the only unbeaten side in the competition.
Their latest victory came against England at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, where Shadab Khan’s maiden ODI century helped Pakistan chase down a target of 242 in dramatic fashion. Shadab remained unbeaten on 113 off 96 balls and shared an unbroken 89-run partnership for the 10th wicket with Haris Rauf, who contributed seven runs, to secure a one-wicket win in the 48th over.
Earlier, Pakistan opened their campaign with a 37-run victory over Sri Lanka after scoring 305 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. They subsequently defeated England by 87 runs at the same venue, posting 302/9.
With a place in the final already secured, Pakistan will look to maintain their momentum as they prepare for the title clash.
