Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 187 at 8 a.m. on Monday, placing the national capital in the ‘moderate’ category, even as the reappearance of thick white foam on the Yamuna near Kalindi Kunj raised fresh concerns over water pollution.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality varied considerably across monitoring stations, with several areas reporting readings in the ‘poor’ category despite relatively lower levels elsewhere.
Burari recorded an AQI of 128, followed by Badarpur at 125, Nangloi at 150, Jawaharlal Nehru University at 157 and Mandir Marg at 165.
In contrast, Jahangirpuri registered an AQI of 251, while R.K. Puram recorded 233, CRRI Mathura Road 231, Punjabi Bagh 229, Narela 227, Mundka 226 and Vivek Vihar 240. Uttam Nagar and Sirifort reported readings of 215 each, while Dwarka Sector 8 recorded 207. Patparganj and Sonia Vihar stood at 202 each, and Rohini registered 200.
Fine particulate matter, including PM2.5 and PM10, remains a key concern in the capital’s air pollution levels.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR on October 21 to curb further deterioration. Measures under this stage include restrictions on coal and firewood use in tandoors at hotels, restaurants and open-air eateries, as well as limits on diesel generator operations, with exemptions for essential and emergency services.
Meanwhile, the return of white foam near Kalindi Kunj has renewed attention on the Yamuna’s persistent pollution problems. The development comes days after Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted government initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the river and described the inauguration of infrastructure projects worth around ₹9,000 crore as a significant occasion for residents.
