The INDIA bloc will organise a symbolic “public impeachment” proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 30, followed by a large-scale “Dilli Chalo” march culminating at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal announced on Saturday.
In a post on X, Venugopal said the exercise would deliver the public’s verdict on removing what he called the “Vote Chor CEC Gyanesh Kumar”. He described the initiative as part of the opposition’s campaign to “save the Constitution and defeat the Vote Chors”.
According to the announcement, the Congress will organise a mock Parliament at Delhi’s Ashoka Hotel on October 30. The proposal to impeach Kumar is expected to be a central topic of discussion, with leaders and representatives of INDIA bloc parties likely to participate in deliberations on the proposal and the functioning of the Election Commission.
Venugopal also announced that the alliance would hold a “Dilli Chalo March against Vote Chori” on November 1, culminating at Ramlila Maidan.
The opposition is targeting the participation of at least one million people in the march. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to INDIA bloc constituents, urging their leaders and members to assemble in Delhi in full strength to maximise participation.
The planned events come amid continued criticism of the Election Commission by opposition parties, which have accused the poll body of bias and electoral malpractice. The ruling side has rejected the allegations, maintaining that the Commission operates independently and in accordance with the law.
The INDIA bloc is presenting the October 30 mock parliamentary session and the November 1 march as a major mobilisation effort to put pressure on the Election Commission and the government over electoral integrity.
Opposition leaders are expected to use both platforms to reiterate their demands for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
With the two events scheduled just days apart, the alliance aims to keep its allegations of electoral irregularities at the centre of the political debate.
