Etawah, October 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on Sunday took a swipe at the Congress amid reports of seat-sharing tensions with the Samajwadi Party (SP) ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, saying he would not have offered the Congress more than 25 seats if the decision were his to make.
“If we had to give seats, we would not have given more than 25 to the Congress,” Singh told reporters in Etawah when asked about the party’s demand for a larger share in the upcoming polls.
The remarks come after Congress hoardings appeared near the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre in Lucknow, asserting that “200 seats are our right” and that “Uttar Pradesh trusts Rahul Gandhi”. The posters featured Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders, including state party chief Aradhana Mona Misra and Uttar Pradesh in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam.
Commenting on the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, Singh said all parties were campaigning actively and predicted an interesting contest.
He also took a dig at SP president Akhilesh Yadav’s recent meeting with jailed party leader Azam Khan, remarking that the meeting should have taken place earlier.
Reacting to the Congress posters, BJP national spokesperson RP Singh recalled previous seat-sharing discussions between the Congress and SP during by-elections. He claimed the Congress had initially sought seven of 10 seats, later reduced its demand and eventually asked to contest on the SP’s election symbol, but did not receive a seat.
RP Singh said the final decision on how many seats the Congress would get in the alliance rested with Akhilesh Yadav.
Earlier this month, SP MP Awadhesh Prasad had asserted that the Samajwadi Party and Akhilesh Yadav were best positioned to challenge the BJP, underlining the political differences and competing claims among opposition parties ahead of the Uttar Pradesh elections.
