Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has congratulated young badminton player Jagsher Singh Khangurra for winning a bronze medal in boys’ singles at the BWF World Junior Championships 2026 in Cairo, Egypt, describing the achievement as a source of inspiration for aspiring sportspersons across the state.
Mann met the 17-year-old shuttler from Nabha and his family, extending his congratulations to the player, his parents and coaching staff. Sharing photographs and videos of the meeting on X, the Chief Minister praised Khangurra’s dedication and said his international success had brought pride to Punjab.
Mann said the youngster’s hard work and commitment would motivate other young people to pursue sporting excellence. He also expressed pride in the state’s emerging sporting talent and encouraged Khangurra to continue achieving success.
Khangurra secured his place on the podium after reaching the semi-finals, where he lost to Indonesia’s Radithya Bayu Wardhana in a three-game contest. The 14th-seeded Indian went down 15-6, 13-15, 15-3 to his 31st-seeded opponent in a match lasting 49 minutes.
His run to the semi-finals included an impressive quarter-final comeback against Chinese Taipei’s Yuan-Syue Jhuang. After losing the opening game, Khangurra saved a match point in the second before registering a 6-15, 17-15, 15-12 victory to assure himself of a medal.
With the bronze, Khangurra became the ninth Indian to win a boys’ singles medal at the World Junior Championships. Ayush Shetty was the last Indian to achieve the feat, claiming bronze in 2023.
The result took India’s overall medal tally in the individual competition to 13, comprising one gold, five silver and seven bronze medals. India also maintained its run of winning at least one individual medal in consecutive editions, following Tanvi Sharma’s girls’ singles silver in 2025.
