Three people, including the father and uncle of a young woman, have been arrested in Kolkata after a man and his father were allegedly assaulted and forced to walk naked in public over their relationship with the woman, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred in the Bashundhara Park area under Sarsuna police station limits in the city’s southern outskirts, triggering outrage and tension in the locality.
According to the complaint, the young woman was in a relationship with a man from Sarsuna, but her family opposed the relationship. The situation allegedly escalated on Sunday after the woman’s relatives caught the couple in an intimate situation.
The young man was allegedly confined inside a house and assaulted by the woman’s father and uncle. His father was subsequently called to the spot and allegedly threatened with a gun. The family is accused of giving the young man and his father the choice of facing death or walking naked through the street.
A friend of the young man was also reportedly assaulted and humiliated.
A senior Kolkata Police officer said three people had been arrested following a complaint by the young man’s family. A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions, and police said they would seek the accused persons’ custody for further interrogation.
The incident sparked further unrest when local residents gathered outside the woman’s house and allegedly vandalised it. Police reached the scene to control the situation. The woman’s uncle was reportedly caught and assaulted by members of the crowd before being handed over to the police.
Some residents also alleged that the woman’s family had links with local Trinamool Congress leaders, though the claim was not independently established.
Social activist Shaswati Ghosh questioned both the alleged perpetrators and the response of those who witnessed the incident, saying the role of eyewitnesses and whether anyone intervened also needed investigation.
Police are investigating the incident as tensions continue in the area.
