Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to restore its students’ union election process and revoke suspensions and show-cause notices issued during a 14-day protest, while requiring the protesting students to publicly apologise for alleged defamatory remarks against the university administration.
In an order issued on Monday, the university said the students had undertaken to issue a public apology at a press conference for statements, actions or social media posts made against the administration during the agitation. The students have also agreed to remove the relevant posts from social media platforms, with compliance to be monitored.
The order stated that the protest must be called off immediately.
The university announced that students’ union elections would be held after the approval of the union’s constitution, with polling scheduled within 15 days of that approval. A committee will be constituted to draft the constitution.
It also revoked the suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest. Separately, a committee will be formed to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the agitation.
The decision follows protests that began on October 12 over demands to restore the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), which was dissolved in 2006. Students had also sought the removal of the university’s Chief Proctor, alleging a crackdown on protesters. Several participants joined hunger strikes during the agitation.
The agreement marks a key development in the students’ campaign for the revival of the union and the resumption of its electoral process.
