Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi on Sunday to participate in the two-day Air Force Day Aerial Display 2026, marking the 94th anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are also scheduled to attend the event.
After arriving in the city, Modi inaugurated a new garment manufacturing facility of Arvind Limited in the Mirzamurad area, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s textile and apparel sector.
The facility is expected to generate employment, particularly for women, and contribute to regional economic growth. It also reflects Uttar Pradesh’s expanding manufacturing capabilities, with garments produced in Varanasi intended for domestic and international markets.
Spread across approximately seven acres, the manufacturing unit will produce garments, including undergarments, T-shirts, shorts and lowers. During his visit, the Prime Minister inspected the facility and interacted with women workers to learn about the production process.
Modi is scheduled to attend the Indian Air Force’s aerial display at Namo Ghat as part of the celebrations. The event, titled Wings Over Ganga, is expected to showcase the capabilities of IAF aircraft through a series of aerial manoeuvres over the Ganga.
Large crowds have gathered at Namo Ghat and neighbouring riverfront areas to watch the display. Spectators have also assembled at Bhosale Ghat and on the opposite bank of the Ganga near Ramnagar.
Extensive security arrangements have been put in place at the ghats and surrounding areas. Personnel from the Water Police, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with divers, have been deployed to manage the crowds and respond to emergencies.
Surveillance is also being conducted using military helicopters as part of the security arrangements.
The area has taken on a patriotic atmosphere, with people gathering in large numbers to witness the aerial display. Cultural programmes are also being organised at the venue alongside the Air Force Day celebrations.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh ahead of the event, highlighting its significance for national defence, industrial development and the cultural heritage of the region.
The two-day aerial display forms part of the celebrations marking 94 years of the Indian Air Force and is expected to draw considerable public attention in Varanasi.
