Protesting students at Jamia Millia Islamia have vowed to continue their hunger strike, rejecting the university administration’s latest assurances over the restoration of the students’ union and demanding clear timelines for elections and other pending measures.
In a letter submitted to the Vice-Chancellor on Monday, the students said their peaceful protest would continue until all demands were addressed. They also made it clear that they would not apologise for exercising their right to protest peacefully.
“No protesting students will apologise for implementing their constitutional right of peacefully protesting,” the letter stated.
The students have sought a definite timeline for drafting and approving the Students’ Union Constitution, a clear schedule for union elections, withdrawal of disciplinary action against protesters and the resignation of the university’s Chief Security Advisor. They have also demanded the removal of the Chief Proctor over what they describe as a crackdown on demonstrators.

Earlier on Monday, the university administration announced that students’ union elections would be held and a committee would be formed to draft the union’s constitution. It also said action taken against protesting students would be revoked.
However, the administration did not specify when the constitution would be approved. Its order stated that elections would take place within 15 days of the constitution’s approval.
The students described the announcement as vague and inadequate, arguing that it failed to provide a definite roadmap for restoring the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) or address all their demands.
The agitation began on October 12, with students seeking restoration of the union, which was dissolved in 2006. Several protesters have been on hunger strike as part of the campaign.
The students said they expected a clear commitment from the administration and a time-bound process to establish a democratically elected union.
