A 60-year-old man and his 33-year-old son died after two building slabs collapsed during construction work at Milan Garden in Delhi’s Harsh Vihar area, triggering an overnight rescue operation, officials said on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Chanderpal, 60, son of the late Nanak Chand, and his son Vijay Kumar, 33. Both were residents of Gali No. 14 in Harsh Vihar.
According to officials, the two men were trapped beneath the debris when the structure collapsed on Sunday evening. Rescue teams recovered them during an overnight operation and rushed them to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.
The Delhi Fire Service received information about the incident at around 6.40 p.m. on Sunday and dispatched two fire tenders. Two ambulances and a crane were also deployed, while Civil Defence volunteers and a National Disaster Response Force team assisted in the rescue effort.
Preliminary information indicated that a new floor was being constructed above an old house when part of the existing roof gave way, causing the slab above it to collapse as well.
Delhi Cabinet Ministers Kapil Mishra and Ashish Sood visited the site to assess the situation.
Officials said legal action was being initiated under relevant provisions of law. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances that led to the collapse.
The incident has renewed concerns about structural safety during construction and renovation work in the capital. Earlier this month, part of a multi-storey building also collapsed in north Delhi’s Seemapuri area, prompting a fire service response amid reports that people could be trapped beneath the debris.
