The protest at Jamia Millia Islamia entered its 14th day on Sunday, with students continuing their sit-in on campus and insisting that the university administration address their three key demands.
The protesters are seeking restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia University Students’ Union (JMIUSU), revocation of disciplinary action against students, and accountability for the alleged use of force during the October 17 protests. They have also called for the resignation of the university Proctor.
Security personnel were deployed outside the campus as a precaution. A brief commotion broke out at Gate No. 4 after students without hostel identification cards were denied entry, triggering an argument over access restrictions. The situation was subsequently brought under control.
Student Anish Khan said the movement, which initially focused on restoring the students’ union, had expanded following disciplinary action against protesters. He alleged that students faced suspensions, show-cause notices and restrictions on entering the campus after the October 17 incident.
Another protester, Farhan Israel, reiterated the demand for restoration of the union and called for the resignation of both the Proctor and the chief security advisor. He also demanded that all disciplinary proceedings against students be withdrawn.
Reacting to controversial slogans allegedly written on campus walls, Israel questioned whether the slogans had been confirmed and alleged that the issue was being used to divert attention from the protesters’ demands. He maintained that the students would continue their agitation until their demands were addressed.
The protesters also accused the university administration of attempting to force an end to the demonstration through security measures.
Amid the continuing unrest, the university has decided to shift classes for all courses to online mode.
