Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary D. Raja on Monday claimed that public agitation demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was intensifying, alleging that people were increasingly taking to the streets to express their anger and frustration.
Speaking to IANS, Raja outlined a series of planned protests by the CPI and the opposition INDIA bloc, including a human chain programme on October 30 and a rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1.
Raja said the CPI’s human chain would be an independent party initiative, while the other programmes would be organised under the INDIA bloc banner.
“On October 30, our party will organise a human chain programme. It is an independent programme of the CPI. There is also a public impeachment programme organised on behalf of the INDIA bloc. On November 1, there will be a huge rally at Ramlila Maidan, organised by the INDIA bloc. Our party will also participate,” he said.
Raja alleged that public anger against the Chief Election Commissioner was growing and claimed that the demand for his resignation was gaining momentum.
“Every day, the movement is intensifying, and people are coming out onto the streets. People are extremely angry and anguished, and they demand that the Chief Election Commissioner should resign. However, he is not doing so,” Raja said.
The CPI leader added that INDIA bloc parties had approached the President and the Supreme Court to raise their concerns. He alleged that these steps had not resulted in the Chief Election Commissioner stepping down.
Raja also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he had not addressed the developments taking place in the country.
Asked about Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remarks concerning the Prime Minister’s father, Raja said Kharge was best placed to explain the context in which the comments were made.
“The media is reporting that he has made certain comments or remarks. In what context and under what provocation he said those things, he is competent enough to explain. The Congress party is also competent to explain,” Raja said.
Clarifying his party’s position on personal criticism, Raja said the CPI generally focused on ideological, political, social and economic issues rather than personal attacks.
“As far as our party is concerned, we do not indulge in personal attacks or personal criticism. We raise issues of national importance and those related to people’s livelihoods. We question and criticise the government, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, but we have our own way of criticising those in power,” he added.
The planned programmes reflect the opposition’s continuing efforts to press its concerns over the Election Commission’s functioning, with the CPI preparing a separate mobilisation initiative and joining the INDIA bloc’s proposed rally in the national capital.
