The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning a month-long campaign of synchronised padyatras, or foot marches, starting November 1 to counter the INDIA Bloc’s proposed mega rally in Delhi, with senior political leaders expected to lead events across the country.
The campaign is being organised in response to the Opposition alliance’s scheduled “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” rally at Ramlila Maidan in the national capital on November 1.
Senior ministers and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to participate in the foot marches. BJP National President Nitin Nabin is also likely to attend some of the events.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to participate in a padyatra in Hyderabad on November 2 and another in Haryana on November 5.
The INDIA Bloc has announced its rally to protest against the Election Commission of India (ECI) over alleged irregularities in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders have also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of “vote chori”.
Delhi Police has issued a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the rally, clearing security and traffic coordination arrangements for the event from October 25 to November 3.
However, the proposed rally has triggered a political controversy, with the BJP targeting the Congress-led Opposition alliance over its decision to hold the event on November 1, the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh violence in Delhi.
The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has also written to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, urging them to postpone the rally until after November 10 in view of the festive season.
Kharge has acknowledged that some traders submitted a memorandum on the issue. He said a final decision on the next steps would be taken after consultations with the Congress party and its allies in the INDIA Bloc.
The traders’ body welcomed Kharge’s statement on the proposed rally, describing it as a ray of hope for Delhi’s trading community.
