Srinagar, October 26, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Kulgam Police in Jammu and Kashmir have solved a hit-and-run case within two hours of the incident by using CCTV footage and technical evidence, arresting the suspected driver of the vehicle involved, police said on Monday.

According to a police statement, an unidentified vehicle travelling at high speed struck a load carrier, leaving its occupants seriously injured. The injured were initially taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, because of the critical nature of their injuries.

Following the incident, an FIR (No. 203/2026) was registered at Police Station Kulgam under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). An investigation was launched immediately.

A police team from Kulgam Police Station began efforts to identify the vehicle and trace its driver. Investigators examined CCTV footage and technical evidence, which provided crucial leads in the case.

Through swift and coordinated action, police traced the suspected vehicle and arrested the driver, identified as Mohammad Asif Lone, son of Abdul Rehman Lone, a resident of Chimmer in the DH Pora area. He was apprehended in Chimmer within two hours of the incident, the statement said.

Police said further investigation was underway to establish all relevant facts and complete the necessary legal formalities.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have increasingly been using modern technology, surveillance equipment and digital tools to support criminal investigations. These methods can help investigators identify suspects, reconstruct incidents and collect evidence more efficiently.

Digital investigations may involve the examination of communication records, location data and files recovered from electronic devices. CCTV cameras, GPS tracking and automated vehicle number-plate recognition systems can also help trace movements and establish timelines.

Other forensic tools, including automated fingerprint identification systems, facial recognition technology and geographic information systems, can assist investigators in linking suspects to incidents, analysing crime patterns and identifying possible routes taken by offenders.

The Kulgam case highlights how CCTV footage and technical evidence can help police make rapid progress in an investigation. Further details are expected to emerge as the probe continues.
