New Delhi, October 26, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Nearly 43 per cent of Indian two-wheeler buyers are now actively considering electric vehicles (EVs), up from 30 per cent in 2024, while electric models account for nearly one in four scooters sold in the country, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) released on Monday.

The report said around 1.8 lakh Indians are purchasing their first electric two-wheeler every month, indicating growing consumer interest in electric mobility.

Electric two-wheelers accounted for 9.9 per cent of total two-wheeler sales during April-August 2026, in the financial year 2026-27 so far, compared with 5.5 per cent in FY24. Electric vehicle penetration in the scooter segment rose to 24.1 per cent from 16.8 per cent over the same period.

Electric scooters recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 54 per cent between FY22 and FY26, growing more than three times faster than petrol-powered scooters.

Consumer resistance to electric two-wheelers has also declined, with the proportion of buyers who outright reject them falling to 29 per cent from 38 per cent in 2024.

BCG reported that the share of “E2W Enthusiasts” has increased 1.5 times over the past two years, although detractors continue to account for around 20 per cent of the market.

“The brands that will lead are the ones that build for how Indians actually ride, rather than for price bands alone, and that earn trust across the entire ownership journey, from service and battery assurance to insurance and resale,” said Saurabh Chhajer, Managing Director and Partner at BCG.

The report also highlighted improvements in consumer perceptions of electric two-wheelers. Among short-distance work commuters, 59 per cent found electric two-wheelers aesthetically appealing, compared with 30 per cent in 2024.

The proportion of respondents who associated electric two-wheelers with good pickup increased from 27 per cent to 48 per cent. Similarly, the share of those who viewed them as trusted brands rose from 28 per cent to 46 per cent.

Owners gave electric two-wheelers favourable ratings for low running and maintenance costs, comfort, design, manoeuvrability, storage and digital features.

However, concerns persist over their performance on rough roads, suitability for both city and highway travel, and long-term durability.

The findings suggest that while interest in electric two-wheelers is expanding and consumer resistance is easing, manufacturers still need to address practical ownership concerns and build confidence in service support, battery reliability and resale value.
