Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, on Monday denied any involvement in a social media campaign targeting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), alleging that her name and photograph were being used without her permission.
Debnath clarified that she had neither initiated nor participated in organising, promoting or managing the protest campaign circulating on social media platforms, including Facebook.
The campaign began after the Supreme Court granted bail earlier this month to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in a CBI-registered case concerning alleged financial irregularities at the institution.
The campaign accused the CBI of conducting a lacklustre investigation, claiming that shortcomings in the probe had contributed to Ghosh securing bail.
Posters circulated on social media using the names and photographs of Debnath and a BJP legislator, calling for a street protest on November 12 against the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Ghosh.
“A protest program is being promoted using my name and photo on various social media platforms, including Facebook. But I am not the initiator of that program. I am not in any way involved in organising, promoting or managing the protest program. Such propaganda is being carried out using my name and photo without my permission,” Debnath said.
She also objected to comments attributed to her in the campaign circulated under the names “Voice of Abhaya” and “Voice of Women”.
Emphasising her faith in the judicial system, Debnath said she believed that disputes and public concerns should be addressed in accordance with the law and the Constitution.
“I have faith in the country’s judiciary and the West Bengal government. I believe that every issue should be resolved with respect for the law and the constitution. I strongly condemn the misuse of my name and picture and the involvement of my name in this misleading campaign,” she said.
Debnath further clarified that she had no knowledge of the individuals planning or participating in the proposed demonstrations.
“I want to make it clear that I do not know who is taking to the streets and who wants to protest. I have no relation with any of them,” she added.
Her statement comes amid renewed public attention on the RG Kar case following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Ghosh in the separate financial irregularities case.
