The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged protests at its headquarters and across several states, demanding an apology from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the BJP described as derogatory.
BJP leaders and workers took to the streets in several parts of the country, raising slogans against Kharge and calling on him to withdraw his comments and apologise.
In Delhi, BJP state president Harsh Malhotra, along with other party leaders, staged a protest outside Kharge’s residence.
Demonstrations were also reported in Bihar, Jammu, Kolkata in West Bengal, Bengaluru in Karnataka and at MJ Market in Telangana. Protesters carried party flags, displayed posters and burned effigies of the Congress president to express their opposition to his remarks.
In Bihar, BJP leaders and workers took out a protest march, raising slogans against Kharge and demanding an apology. Some demonstrators also set fire to an effigy of the Congress chief.
In Kolkata, BJP workers held a protest march carrying party flags and an effigy of Kharge. They condemned his remarks and demanded that he apologise over the controversy.
In Bengaluru, BJP leaders demonstrated at Freedom Park, seeking an apology over Kharge’s comments referring to the Prime Minister’s father. Police detained protesting leaders during the demonstration.
BJP workers in Jammu also staged a protest, burning posters of the Congress president and demanding that he withdraw his remarks and apologise for the language used while referring to the Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders and workers gathered at MJ Market in Telangana to join protests being held elsewhere in the country.
The demonstrations followed a political controversy triggered by Kharge’s address at a Congress event in Patna on Sunday. The programme was organised to mark the birth anniversary of Sri Krishna Singh, Bihar’s first Chief Minister.
During the event, a person in the audience reportedly interrupted Kharge, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not leave power.
Responding to the interruption, Kharge said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will have to go). The Congress president reportedly repeated the remark several times, prompting criticism from the BJP over the language used in reference to the Prime Minister.
The BJP has demanded an apology from Kharge, turning the comments into a fresh point of confrontation between the ruling party and the Congress.
