Police in West Bengal have arrested a man identified as Akash Sarkar for allegedly posting derogatory comments about Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and spreading false information about several BJP leaders on social media.
Acting on a written complaint, officers from Nagerbazar police station in north Kolkata arrested Sarkar on Monday. He was subsequently produced before a court in Barrackpore.
According to the allegations, Sarkar repeatedly posted objectionable comments about Chief Minister Adhikari on social media. He is also accused of circulating false information in the names of several West Bengal BJP leaders.
Police have initiated an investigation to establish the circumstances behind the alleged posts and determine the reasons for their publication. Investigators have also sought his custody for further questioning.
In a separate incident, police arrested another man, identified as Surajit Shee, in West Midnapore district on Sunday over allegedly posting distorted and satirical content about Hindu deities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the West Bengal Chief Minister on social media.
Several people associated with Hindutva organisations had reportedly lodged complaints against Shee over the posts.
He was produced before a court on Sunday, which remanded him to judicial custody until November 4.
The two cases come amid police action over allegedly objectionable social media content in the state. Investigations in both matters are ongoing, and the allegations against the accused remain subject to legal proceedings.
