Actress Poonam Dhillon has remembered legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, highlighting the enduring impact of her voice on Hindi cinema and recalling the special significance of having her work honoured at Tagore Theatre.
Speaking on the sidelines of ‘Surila Safar-30: An Evening of Bollywood Melodies’ at Tagore Theatre, Poonam reflected on her early years in the film industry and her association with Mangeshkar’s songs.
“Lata ji is very dear to all of us. Without her, the music of Hindi films would have been incomplete. It is a great thing that she is being honoured and remembered here. And that too in my lovely Tagore Theatre. It is a great joy for me,” Poonam said.
The actress also recalled her personal connection with the venue, saying she had been attending concerts there since childhood.
“We used to come here for our concerts since childhood. It is a very special day for me,” she added.
Poonam, who has appeared in hundreds of films, further recalled the extent of Mangeshkar’s contribution to her own cinematic journey. She said the legendary singer had lent her voice to songs in almost all of her films, apart from one or two projects.
“I have done hundreds of films. Except for one or two films, she has sung in all of them. All of her songs are one of the best. They are very beautiful songs,” she said.
The evening at Tagore Theatre celebrated classic Bollywood melodies while paying tribute to Mangeshkar’s lasting contribution to Indian film music.
Lata Mangeshkar, widely known as the ‘Nightingale of India’ and ‘Swar Kokila’, died on February 6, 2022, at the age of 92. She passed away at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following multiple organ failure after testing positive for COVID-19.
Her death brought an era in Indian playback singing to a close and triggered tributes from across the country.
