India will begin their three-match ODI series against the West Indies on Sunday as both teams step up preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with the opening match set to be played at the Greenfield International Stadium here.
The series will also mark the return of veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to ODI action. The two last featured for India during the away ODI series against England in July.
Virat has continued to remain in strong form, while Rohit made a significant contribution in the third ODI against England, scoring a century at a time when questions were being raised about his future in the Indian side.
With several key players involved in India’s Asian Games gold-medal defence, the series provides an opportunity to assess the team’s bench strength. Players such as Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, Ramandeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar and Auqib Nabi are likely to be keen for valuable international game time.
Another point of interest will be the opportunities given to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is part of the squad as the third opener behind captain Shubman Gill and Rohit.
For the West Indies, the series assumes added importance ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers. The Caribbean side has not secured automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup and will have to navigate the qualifying route after missing the 2023 tournament.
The first ODI will be played on Sunday, followed by the second at Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. The third and final match is scheduled for October 3 at the PCA International Cricket Stadium, Ground A.
