US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving advanced artificial intelligence technologies and to use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” for the emerging technologies covered by the agreement, according to a White House fact sheet on the outcome of their summit.
The two leaders established the US-China Super Intelligence (SI) Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits associated with the technology. The White House said the next exchange is expected by November 2026, when China is scheduled to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen.
The agreement on an incident communication channel follows discussions between senior US and Chinese officials earlier this month on AI safety and emergency communication protocols.
The summit also covered a range of global issues, including Russia, North Korea and Iran. Trump and Xi agreed that Iran should never possess a nuclear weapon and that no country or institution should be allowed to impose tolls on international waterways. The White House fact sheet did not specifically name the Strait of Hormuz in this context.
Trump also urged Xi to increase China’s production of refined petroleum products to help stabilise global energy supplies amid concerns over energy prices, according to the White House.
On economic ties, the two countries operationalised their government-to-government Boards of Trade and Investment, mechanisms established during their May 2026 summit in Beijing. Under the Board of Trade, the US and China reached consensus on recommendations for more favourable tariff treatment for $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction and launched an agricultural market-access working group.
China also plans to import at least 10 million metric tonnes of US coal in both 2027 and 2028. The two sides are continuing discussions on US concerns over supply shortages involving rare earths and other critical minerals, with the stated aim of restoring shipments to appropriate levels.
The White House said the leaders agreed to build a “constructive relationship of strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. They also agreed to support each other as hosts of the G20 and APEC summits.
Xi’s three-day US state visit concluded on Friday. The Washington summit was the third in-person meeting between Xi and Trump since Trump’s return to office, following their meetings in Busan in October 2025 and Beijing in May 2026.
