Six-time world champion boxer Mary Kom has recalled one of the darkest periods of her life, revealing that she had contemplated ending her life but chose to keep going for the sake of her young children.
The Olympic medallist opened up about the difficult phase during a conversation inside the Bigg Boss 20 house, where she spoke about her struggles with fellow contestants Isha Rikhi, Rhiti Tiwari and Kanika Mann.
Speaking about the emotional toll of her journey, Mary said that despite her reputation for strength and resilience inside the boxing ring, there was a period when she felt completely broken.
“I am very strong. But in that year, I lost a bit. I was broken. I had a lot to do,” she said.
“I wanted to end my life. That’s what I was thinking. But I am still alive for my children. They were small,” she added.
Mary also reflected on the challenges and sacrifices she had faced throughout her life, saying she had fought through difficult circumstances for her family, her state and the country.
“I have been through a lot since I was young. I have sacrificed for my family, for my state and for my nation. Who can fight like this? This is a challenge,” she said.
The boxer also spoke about her continuing competitive spirit, saying she still wanted to win more medals but could no longer compete because of the age limit.
“I am a different athlete. I want to win more medals. One medal isn’t enough. Two medals aren’t enough. Three medals aren’t enough. I am still hungry but can no longer participate because of overage,” Mary said.
At another emotional moment, she spoke about how difficult it had become for her to express her feelings after years of dealing with challenging circumstances.
“I have cried a lot. Now, slowly, I have to pull the tears inside,” she said.
Hailing from Manipur, Mary is among India’s most accomplished boxers. She became a six-time world champion and represented the country at several international competitions, including the Olympics.
Mary and her former husband, Onler Kom, are parents to four children.
