Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said several people as well as internal and external forces were creating obstacles to India’s aspiration of emerging as a global leader, and called upon citizens to confront these challenges while strengthening the country.
Addressing a gathering at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur after unfurling the Tricolour on India’s 80th Independence Day, Bhagwat said the country had attained freedom and would remain independent, but its continuing responsibility was to make India happy, prosperous and secure.
He said India should strive to become a ‘Vishwaguru’ — a global teacher and guiding force — by contributing meaningfully to humanity without compromising its foundational principles.
Recalling the freedom struggle that began in earnest with the 1857 uprising, Bhagwat paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s Independence. He stressed that safeguarding freedom required continuous commitment even after the end of colonial rule.
Referring to Hindutva ideologue V.D. Savarkar, Bhagwat said preserving the freedom secured through sacrifice was a fundamental responsibility of citizens and that its progressive values should be incorporated into society.
Bhagwat also explained the symbolism of the colours of the National Flag. He said saffron represented action, knowledge, duty and the need for sacrifice to keep the country secure and prosperous. White, he said, symbolised purity of mind, peace and a life guided by duty and sacrifice, while green represented the nation’s overall prosperity.
He said differences in viewpoints and ways of thinking among individuals were natural and that such diversity represented the true expression of national unity.
Calling for a collective response to contemporary challenges, Bhagwat urged citizens to remain firm on the country’s foundational values while ensuring that India emerges as a guiding light for the world.
