Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sisters Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were detained for 30 days on Monday, a day after their sister Aleema Khan was arrested under a Lahore Deputy Commissioner’s detention order, according to local media reports.
The detentions come ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) planned protest and march to Islamabad on September 27.
According to an order issued by the Lahore Deputy Commissioner’s office on September 20, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi were detained under the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960. The order stated that their activities were considered “prejudicial to the public safety and maintenance of public order”.
The two were ordered to remain in custody under the supervision of the superintendent of Central Jail, Kot Lakhpat, Pakistan-based Dawn reported.
The action followed Aleema Khan’s detention on Sunday for 30 days under the same law. The Lahore DC also ordered the 30-day detention of her driver, Muhammad Ameer, according to The Express Tribune.
PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan condemned Aleema Khan’s arrest and called for her immediate release. He said the party had consistently maintained that its September 27 march would be peaceful and political.
In a post on X, Gohar said the detention of Aleema Khan or placing her under house arrest under the MPO was “tantamount to fueling violence and tension”. He described the arrest as the “first step towards worsening the situation” and said the party would announce its response to the measures.
Aleema Khan’s son, Shahrez Khan, alleged that his mother was abducted after leaving her home on Sunday morning. He said she had been granted bail in all cases against her in Lahore and demanded that the government disclose her whereabouts and ensure her release.
Imran Khan’s son, Kasim Khan, also alleged that police had taken his aunt into custody and demanded access for her family and lawyers. He accused the government of violating due process and human rights, while calling for Aleema Khan’s immediate release.
The latest detentions involving Imran Khan’s sisters come amid heightened political tensions ahead of the PTI’s planned march to Islamabad.
