Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) founder and legislator Humayun Kabir on Monday approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging selective targeting of his party leaders and workers by the West Bengal Police ahead of the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll in Murshidabad district.
In a related move, Kabir announced that he would not campaign for his son and AJUP candidate Golam Nabi Azad, who is contesting from Rejinagar. He also asked Azad to avoid physical campaigning and concentrate on social media, leaving the final decision to the voters.
Kabir alleged that AJUP’s Beldanga-1 block president Munaim Sheikh had been arrested and that state committee secretary Sukhbar Mollah was arrested from his residence around midnight.
He alleged that Mollah had been falsely implicated in a case involving fake currency notes and firearms and said he had raised the issue with the ECI, alleging “intentional and selective targeting” of party leaders and workers.
Kabir, a former Trinamool Congress leader, also sought the immediate transfer of the superintendent of Baharampur Police District and the officers-in-charge of Beldanga and Rejinagar police stations.
Meanwhile, Kabir was summoned to Baharampur Police Station on Monday in connection with an audio clip that surfaced recently and allegedly contains remarks about violence. The authenticity of the clip could not be independently verified.
Police said a case had been registered against Kabir under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The notice directed him to cooperate with investigating officer Rabindranath Biswas and warned of legal action under Section 208 of the BNS.
The Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly constituencies are scheduled to vote on October 6, with counting set for October 9.
In the Assembly elections earlier this year, Kabir won both Naoda and Rejinagar seats in Murshidabad. He subsequently retained Naoda, necessitating the Rejinagar bypoll.
The constituency is witnessing a seven-cornered contest involving the BJP, two Trinamool Congress factions, Congress, CPI-M, Revolutionary Party and AJUP. Around 65 per cent of Rejinagar’s voters belong to the minority community, adding significance to the closely watched bypoll.
