An office of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants in Kolkata’s Jadavpur area, prompting the city police to launch an investigation into the incident.
The vandalism reportedly took place at the party office in Vidyasagar Colony No. 4 on Sunday night. According to Kolkata Police, the office door was allegedly damaged, while furniture and other items inside were vandalised.
MAITC workers who reached the office after the incident claimed they found the sofa set overturned and the party flag, bearing a pair of flowers, torn and scattered on the floor. They also alleged that a water jug had been broken and that an attempt had been made to search and damage a cupboard.
Local MAITC workers alleged that BJP-backed miscreants were behind the attack, a charge denied by the BJP.
“Our party office was vandalised by BJP-backed miscreants. We have lodged a complaint with the police,” a local MAITC worker said.
The BJP, however, rejected the allegation and claimed that the incident was linked to an internal factional dispute within the Trinamool Congress.
Video footage released by the MAITC faction did not clearly identify any individual or show the flag of a particular political party.
A complaint regarding the incident was emailed to the Netaji Nagar police station. Police have begun examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those responsible. No arrests have been reported so far.
The latest incident came a day after the party office and residence of former Trinamool Congress MLA Debabrata Majumdar were allegedly attacked in the same area.
On Saturday night, unidentified miscreants were also accused of vandalising several Communist Party of India (Marxist) offices and attacking Majumdar’s residence and party office in Jadavpur.
Police said on Sunday morning that a group of motorcycle-borne miscreants had rampaged through party offices in at least six wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The attackers allegedly pulled down party flags and threw them on the ground.
Majumdar, a former MLA from Ward 96 and a long-time KMC councillor, was also allegedly targeted during the violence.
The identities and political affiliations of those involved in the earlier incidents remain unclear. Police are examining whether the latest vandalism is connected to the previous attacks, while political parties have traded allegations over the incidents.
