The Union government and Meta are set to continue discussions on digital platform regulations, with the next round of talks expected to focus on the company’s recommendation algorithms and content moderation systems amid increasing scrutiny over online safety concerns.
Government sources said Meta’s global team will remain engaged with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to examine how its algorithms recommend content to users and how its moderation practices comply with Indian laws and regulatory requirements.
The discussions are expected to address concerns related to the spread of harmful content, deepfakes and child sexual abuse material on digital platforms.
Union Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is also likely to meet representatives of Meta later on Thursday as part of the ongoing engagement, sources said.
The government’s discussions with Meta are part of a broader effort to ensure that social media intermediaries strengthen safeguards against misuse of their platforms while adhering to India’s regulatory framework.
The latest round of talks follows Meta’s apology over the temporary restriction of a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan said the company had conveyed its apology directly to Minister Vaishnaw.
“I apologised to the minister on behalf of Meta for the error restricting PM Modi’s post,” Kaplan said in a statement shared by the company.
Kaplan was part of a global Meta delegation that met Vaishnaw on Wednesday, during which the company acknowledged issues related to the functioning of its platforms. The delegation had also held discussions with IT Secretary S. Krishnan before the meeting with the minister.
The government’s engagement with Meta comes amid heightened attention on the role of major social media platforms in managing online content, ensuring transparency and preventing misuse of digital networks.
