Gold and diamond jewellery valued at more than Rs 1 crore was seized from a domestic cargo consignment at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata on Thursday, with one person arrested in connection with the case.
According to police officials, the consignment was intercepted during a routine security check at the airport. Besides gold ornaments, it contained diamond jewellery as well as pieces studded with rubies and emeralds.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the gold jewellery alone is worth over Rs 50 lakh, while the diamonds and other precious stones significantly increase the overall value of the seized consignment.
The arrest followed after airport authorities and police became suspicious of a man who arrived to collect the shipment. He was detained for questioning, following which the jewellery was recovered. Police have not disclosed the identity of the accused.
Investigators are now examining the source of the consignment, its intended destination and whether it was part of a larger organised smuggling network. Officials are also trying to identify those who instructed the arrested individual to receive the shipment and determine the involvement of other suspects.
“A person has been arrested with a large quantity of gold and diamond jewellery. He is being interrogated, and a case has been registered. The investigation is focused on establishing the purpose of transporting these valuables and identifying their intended recipients,” a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.
The seizure has prompted authorities to tighten security measures at the Kolkata airport, with enhanced surveillance of both passenger and cargo movements. The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has launched a detailed investigation into the case.
