A passenger was detained at Cochin International Airport after allegedly attempting to open the emergency exit door of a Batik Air flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi while the aircraft was in the air, triggering panic among passengers and crew members.
The passenger, identified as Jamsheer, a native of Kerala’s Palakkad district, was taken into custody after the aircraft landed safely at Kochi on Wednesday night.
Officials said personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) initially detained the passenger at the airport, following which he was handed over to the Nedumbassery Police for further investigation. Police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident.
According to investigators, the incident took place during the Kuala Lumpur-Kochi flight when the passenger allegedly tried to open the aircraft’s emergency exit door. The cabin crew, with the assistance of fellow passengers, immediately intervened and restrained him, preventing any further escalation.
The aircraft continued its journey without disruption and landed safely at Cochin International Airport. After landing, security personnel escorted the passenger from the aircraft and handed him over to the police.
A complaint filed by another passenger led to the registration of the case, officials said.
Police and aviation security agencies are questioning the passenger to determine the circumstances behind the incident and ascertain whether there was any specific motive involved. Statements of the cabin crew and passengers, along with reports from the airline, are also being examined as part of the investigation.
The accused passenger is expected to be produced before a local court after completion of the questioning process.
No injuries were reported among passengers or crew members, and the flight operation was completed safely despite the mid-air scare.
