Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday urged Congress workers to extend all possible assistance in relief and restoration efforts in flood- and landslide-hit Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, expressing grief over the loss of lives and extensive damage caused by the natural calamities.
Gandhi, in a post on his official X handle, said he was deeply saddened by the deaths and widespread destruction caused by landslides and flash floods across the two northeastern states.
“My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured. I urge Congress workers to support the relief and restoration efforts in every possible way. I stand in solidarity with every affected family in this difficult hour,” he said.
Congress MP and party in-charge for Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, also expressed anguish over the devastation in Nagaland. He conveyed condolences to families who lost their loved ones and prayed for the safety and speedy recovery of those affected.
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) said several people had lost their lives due to incessant rains, floods and landslides, while thousands of families were displaced. It said homes, roads, bridges, agricultural land and livelihoods had suffered major damage.
“The tragedy that claimed the lives of young students and many others is a painful reminder that disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure cannot be ignored,” the NPCC said.
The state Congress unit urged the government to provide immediate relief, ensure fair compensation, restore roads and essential services at the earliest, and prepare a long-term disaster mitigation strategy for vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir, along with other parliamentarians from Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought extensive Central assistance for flood-affected areas.
The delegation, led by Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, included Tapir Gao and Tai Tagak from Arunachal Pradesh, and S. Phangnon Konyak from Nagaland. The MPs apprised the Prime Minister of the damage caused by heavy rainfall, floods and landslides and discussed the need for urgent support for infrastructure restoration and rehabilitation.
Prime Minister Modi assured the delegation that the Centre would provide all necessary assistance and coordinate with the state governments to address the challenges arising from the ongoing natural disasters.
