Gulfam Khan Says Television Audiences Now Embrace Diverse Genres and Storytelling

Mumbai, August 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Veteran television actress Gulfam Khan believes the Indian television industry has undergone a significant transformation, with audiences today embracing a much wider range of stories and genres than ever before.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, the actress reflected on how viewer preferences have evolved over the years, challenging the long-held perception that television audiences favour only a particular style of programming.

Recalling the changing landscape of Indian television, Gulfam said there was a time when rural-based dramas such as Balika Vadhu, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo and Pratigya enjoyed immense popularity. This was later followed by the success of urban family dramas including Kumkum Bhagya and Kundali Bhagya.

“Earlier, we believed that audiences preferred only a certain type of content. There were shows like Balika Vadhu, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, and Pratigya, which were rooted in rural India. Later, urban shows like Kumkum Bhagya and Kundali Bhagya also became popular,” she said.

According to Gulfam, experience has shown that audiences are not confined to a single genre but appreciate varied storytelling.

“What I have realized is that audiences do not prefer just one genre—they enjoy all kinds of stories. Every show has its own audience. Some people enjoy urban narratives, some connect with rural stories, while others relate to middle-class families from cities like Delhi, Punjab or Mumbai,” she added.

The actress also highlighted the enduring appeal of fantasy and mythological content.

“Then there are universal stories like Aladdin, mythological shows and Ramayana, which appeal to people across age groups, irrespective of their religion or background. Creators should continue making different kinds of shows because every genre has its own audience,” she said.

Gulfam Khan, who began her television career with Lipstick in 2003, is widely recognised for portraying Nazneen in the fantasy drama Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga, which aired between 2018 and 2020.
