View-blocking fences removed from Kolkata’s Elliot Park, Mamata Banerjee’s former morning walk venue

Kolkata, August 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

View-blocking tin fences installed around Kolkata’s Elliot Park have been removed following an order from West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, restoring public visibility of the park’s greenery and open landscape.

The Chief Minister shared the development on social media on Thursday, posting comparative pictures of Elliot Park showing the area before and after the removal of the barricades.

The earlier images showed high tin fencing along the Chowringhee Road side of the park, while the latest pictures displayed an unobstructed view of the green space.

In his post, Adhikari criticised the previous arrangement without directly naming former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had used the park as a venue for her morning walks during her tenure.

“The natural beauty, greenery and picturesque views of Elliott Park in the Maidan had, until now, been completely hidden from ordinary people by a high tin fence on the side facing Chowringhee Road. This was done so that an honourable dignitary in the previous regime would not be seen by the general public when she used to go for her morning walk there,” Adhikari said.

The Chief Minister said the park’s natural beauty had now been opened again for citizens and thanked the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for removing the fencing.

“The wealth of the people should remain open for the people,” he added.

The installation of the tall tin barricades around Elliot Park had earlier drawn criticism from morning walkers, local residents and civil society members, who argued that the fencing blocked public access to the park’s visual appeal and affected its open character.

The removal of the barriers has been welcomed by citizens, particularly regular morning walkers, who said the restored view would allow people to once again enjoy the greenery and surroundings of the popular city park.
