Congress MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Thursday met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and sought approval for the construction of an elevated corridor aimed at addressing the city’s growing traffic pressure and future connectivity needs.
During the meeting, Aujla highlighted the increasing congestion on major routes, particularly Airport Road, and stressed the need for timely infrastructure planning in view of upcoming developments, including the operationalisation of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and the proposed international cricket stadium in the city.
Aujla told the Union Minister that Amritsar, being an important international gateway, attracts a large number of pilgrims, tourists, business travellers and visitors from across India and abroad. He said the expected rise in traffic volume requires immediate expansion of road infrastructure to prevent future congestion.
The MP proposed an elevated corridor starting from Gumtala Bypass, passing through Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport and Rajasansi, and connecting with the roundabout near Morcha Sahib Gurdwara on the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway.
He said the proposed corridor would provide signal-free connectivity between the airport, the expressway and important parts of the city, reducing travel time and easing traffic movement.
Aujla pointed out that Airport Road currently witnesses heavy congestion throughout the day, with frequent traffic jams causing delays for passengers travelling to and from the airport. He said despite efforts by the Punjab Police and local administration, the existing road network is not sufficient to handle the anticipated increase in traffic.
Seeking early intervention, the MP urged Gadkari to direct the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to conduct a feasibility assessment and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the elevated corridor at the earliest.
He also requested that the project be accorded priority status as a major national infrastructure initiative to ensure timely completion.
Aujla said the elevated corridor would provide long-term relief to Amritsar residents while strengthening connectivity to the international airport, the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and the upcoming cricket stadium.
He added that improved connectivity would further boost tourism, religious travel, trade and overall economic development of the historic city.
