Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh has been selected as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the 31st edition of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), recognising her outstanding contribution to the growth and global influence of Asian cinema.
The prestigious honour is presented annually to an Asian film professional or organisation that has made exceptional contributions to the advancement of Asian cinema.
Michelle Yeoh began her screen career in Hong Kong action films with “Yes, Madam” (1985) and went on to earn acclaim through performances in “Police Story 3: Supercop” (1992) and “Wing Chun” (1994), helping redefine the portrayal of female action heroes on screen.
Her international breakthrough came with the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997), followed by Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000), which achieved worldwide commercial success and critical acclaim, becoming one of the most celebrated non-English-language films in global cinema.
Before entering films, Yeoh won the Miss Malaysia World title in 1983 at the age of 21 and represented Malaysia at the Miss World 1983 pageant in London, where she finished among the top contestants. She later entered the entertainment industry through television commercials, including one alongside martial arts icon Jackie Chan, marking the beginning of her acting career.
In recent years, Yeoh has appeared in internationally successful productions including “Crazy Rich Asians”, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, and “Wicked”.
Her career reached a historic milestone with “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first Asian performer to receive the honour in the category. The role also earned her major accolades, including Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and Golden Globe awards.
The Busan International Film Festival’s recognition adds another milestone to Yeoh’s celebrated career, which spans more than four decades and has played a significant role in bringing Asian cinema and talent to global audiences.
