Celebrity chef Vikas Khanna opened up about his early struggles, childhood challenges and his journey from Amritsar to becoming a globally recognised name in the culinary world during his appearance on the chat show ‘Shekhar Tonite’.
During the episode, Vikas recalled how he began his culinary journey by running a small kitty party catering business from his home in Amritsar. He said the venture helped him understand the basics of cooking and entrepreneurship at an early stage.
Host Shekhar Suman praised Vikas for his achievements and said that the chef had brought pride to India on the global stage. The conversation also explored Vikas’ roots in Amritsar and the experiences that shaped his career.
Reflecting on his childhood, Vikas said his journey was filled with challenges. He shared that he was born during the 1971 India-Pakistan war and doctors had told his parents that he might not be able to walk like other children.
He recalled spending years undergoing treatment and credited his mother for always believing in him. “My son wasn’t born to walk, he was born to fly,” Vikas quoted his mother as saying.
The chef said that since he could not participate in sports like other children, he found happiness and purpose in the kitchen. He described cooking as the passion that gave him a new direction in life.
Vikas further said that his mother and sister played a key role in encouraging his interest in food. Together, they started a small catering venture from their home in Amritsar, which gave him the confidence to pursue bigger dreams.
He added that discovering cuisines beyond Punjabi food opened a new world for him and inspired him to dedicate himself fully to culinary arts.
The chef said his journey eventually took him from the streets of Amritsar to kitchens across the world, transforming his early passion into an international career.
