Two minors have been detained by Baruipur Police in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district for allegedly harassing and molesting a Class 7 student on a public road, raising fresh concerns over the safety of girls in the area.
According to a senior officer of Baruipur Police District, the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when the girl was returning home from school with her younger brother.
Police said the two accused minors allegedly followed the student, stopped her on the road and behaved inappropriately while asking for her name and mobile number. The situation escalated when one of them allegedly held her hand, pulled her and attempted to take her away, following which the girl raised an alarm.
Hearing her cries, local residents rushed to the spot and caught one of the accused. The girl’s family later lodged a complaint at Baruipur Police Station. Police launched a search operation and detained the second accused later the same evening.
“Both minors have been formally detained and will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Thursday for sending them to a juvenile home,” a senior police officer said. The officer added that the victim underwent medical examination at a government hospital.
The girl’s mother expressed anguish over the incident and questioned the safety of young girls in public spaces.
“They were pushing and shoving her in the middle of the road. My daughter was frightened and tried to reach home quickly, but they stopped her, asked for her phone number and pulled her hand. If such incidents happen openly on roads, where is the safety for girls?” she said, demanding strict action against those involved.
The incident has added to concerns over crimes against women and minors in the Baruipur area.
On July 14, police arrested a person for allegedly taking a minor girl from Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district to a rented house in Baruipur with an alleged attempt to sexually assault her. Police said the accused had met the girl at Sealdah railway station and allegedly lured her.
Earlier, on July 5, tension erupted in Baruipur’s Suryapur area after the body of a minor girl was recovered from a local pond following allegations of gang rape and murder.
The incident triggered widespread outrage and a mob lynching in which an innocent resident, Indrajit Mandal, was killed. Police later arrested four main accused in the case. One of them, Pravas Mondal, was killed in a police encounter while allegedly attempting to escape custody after snatching a firearm.
