India’s Ambassador to Japan Nagma Mallick on Thursday paid tribute to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by laying flowers at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, as the city observed the 81st anniversary of the devastating attack.
During her visit, Ambassador Mallick met Hiroshima Governor Mika Yokota and Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui at a reception attended by members of the diplomatic corps invited for the annual Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony.
The Indian envoy, along with Hiroshima Mayor Matsui, Hiroshima Prefectural Assembly Chairman Takashi Nakamoto and Hiroshima Japan-India Association President Kazuhisa Matsumoto, also laid a wreath at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima.
Sharing details of the visit on X, the Indian Embassy in Japan said, “Ambassador Mallick, together with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui, Hiroshima Prefectural Assembly Chairman Takashi Nakamoto, and Hiroshima Japan-India Association President Kazuhisa Matsumoto, laid a wreath at the statue of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi).”
The embassy also expressed gratitude to members of the Indian community in Japan who participated in the programme and supported the event.
The Hiroshima memorial ceremony was held to mark the anniversary of August 6, 1945, when a uranium bomb dropped by the US bomber Enola Gay exploded over the city during the final phase of World War II. The attack killed an estimated 140,000 people by the end of that year.
During Thursday’s ceremony, Hiroshima called on the international community to work towards the abolition of nuclear weapons and criticised their use as instruments of intimidation and warfare.
In the Peace Declaration, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui warned that ignoring the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and allowing the use of force for national interests could lead to cycles of violence resulting in another Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
A minute of silence was observed at 8:15 am local time, marking the exact moment when the atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
Around 50,000 people gathered at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to honour the victims, with representatives from 121 countries and the European Union attending the ceremony.
