Four people were killed and five others injured after a vehicle carrying nine people plunged into a gorge on the Sangrah-Palar road in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, police said on Wednesday.
The accident occurred late Tuesday night in the Gat Log area of the Renuka Assembly constituency, when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road while negotiating a turn and rolled down the gorge.
Local residents who heard the crash rushed to the spot, informed the police and joined the rescue operation. A police team subsequently reached the site and, with the help of villagers, pulled the injured passengers from the gorge before taking them to a nearby hospital for first aid.
The injured were later admitted to Dr YS Parmar Medical College in Nahan.
According to police, one of the survivors said the vehicle was overcrowded and suggested that the driver may have lost control while negotiating a turn. However, the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established.
The rescue operation was challenging because of the depth of the gorge and the difficult terrain. An injured passenger said rescuers faced considerable difficulty in reaching and extracting those trapped in the vehicle.
Most of the passengers were residents of Sirmaur district. Police have launched an investigation, while the process of identifying the deceased and injured is underway.
Police records indicate that rash driving, overloading, inexperienced drivers, mechanically unfit vehicles and poor road conditions have contributed to accidents in the district. Sirmaur has also been identified as an accident-prone area, with police officials previously raising concerns over reckless driving and inadequate training among some private transport operators.
