A Special Task Force (STF) investigation has revealed that Pakistani national Wahab Alam, arrested in West Bengal’s Habra, allegedly used the name and identity of the father of his co-accused, Mohammad Izaz, to obtain Indian identity documents, officials said.
According to investigators, Alam illegally entered India in 2012 and subsequently stayed for an extended period at Izaz’s residence in Topsia, East Kolkata. During this period, he allegedly used documents belonging to Izaz’s father to establish an Indian identity for himself.
The STF recovered an Aadhaar card, PAN card and EPIC card from Alam. Investigators found that all three documents listed Izaz’s father as Alam’s father. The probe indicates that Alam intended to use these documents to obtain an Indian passport.
However, his plans were disrupted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal. Alam was reportedly categorised under the “logical discrepancy” category and summoned by the booth-level officer (BLO) to establish his identity and credentials.
Investigators said Alam did not appear for the hearing and instead fled to Habra in North 24 Parganas district, where he was subsequently arrested. The probe suggests he planned to cross into Bangladesh through the international border in the district.
Sources said Alam had also stayed in Haldia and frequently travelled to Nepal, where he reportedly operates a small franchise business. Nepal is believed to have played a key role in his entry into India and subsequent movements.
According to the investigation, Alam first entered India through Nepal in 2012 after meeting Izaz at a mosque. He was allegedly assigned by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to collect information related to the Indian Army, Navy and Railways in the eastern region.
The STF has also found that Alam allegedly used multiple prepaid SIM cards obtained with his Indian identity documents to communicate with handlers in Pakistan. Investigators said the SIM cards were destroyed after a few communications and replaced with new ones to avoid detection.
