China’s Su Wen broke a 36-year-old Asian Games record in the men’s triple jump on Saturday, while Japan and Bahrain claimed the marathon titles on a day that also saw Games records fall in the men’s shot put and women’s 400m.
Su produced a 17.42m effort to surpass compatriot Zou Sixin’s 17.31m mark set at the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. The performance earned Su his first Asian Games gold. Japan’s Manato Miyao won silver with 16.77m, while China’s Ma Yinglong took bronze with 16.75m.
Su said he struggled to find his rhythm during his opening attempts before settling himself ahead of his third jump.
“This is a new beginning for me,” he said.
