India settled for the silver medal in the men’s recurve team event at the Asian Games after losing 1-5 to nine-time champions South Korea in the final at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Friday.
The Indian trio of Neeraj Chauhan, Yashdeep Bhoge and Dhiraj Bommadevara were unable to overcome the Korean combination of Kim Je Deok, Kim Woojin and Lee Wooseok, as South Korea retained its dominance in the event.
The result gave India a second consecutive silver in the men’s recurve team competition. India had also lost to South Korea in the final at the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, with Bommadevara part of that silver-medal-winning squad.
India and South Korea began the final by sharing the opening set after both teams scored 56 points. The Indian archers had an opportunity to take the set after scoring 28 from their first three arrows, but finished with 10, 8 and 9 to tie the score.
South Korea then raised the pressure in the second set, hitting four 10s to win 57-50. India struggled for consistency, with Yashdeep and Neeraj registering an eight each while Bommadevara also scored two eights.
Trailing 1-3, India needed to win the third set to stay in contention. The Indian trio opened with 28 from their first three arrows, matching South Korea’s score, but Neeraj then shot a seven. Yashdeep and Bommadevara followed with a nine and 10, while South Korea produced 28 from its final three arrows to take the set 56-54.
South Korea therefore secured the final 5-1, leaving India with silver.
