India secured the bronze medal in the men’s quadrant event in sepaktakraw at the Asian Games after losing 0-2 to Japan in the semifinal at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Gymnasium on Friday.
The Indian quartet of Malemnganba Singh Sorokhaibam, Ram Kumar Sharma, Bobby Kumar and Akash Yumnam went down to Japan’s Yuki Sato, Ryota Haruhara, Wataru Narawa and Yota Ichikawa in a closely contested semifinal, losing 12-15, 13-15.
Lokhon Singh Elangbam and Tekong Arun were the substitutes for India, while Seiya Takano and Toshitaka Naito were Japan’s substitutes.
The bronze is only India’s third medal in sepaktakraw at the Asian Games. India had won bronze in the men’s team regu event at the 2018 Jakarta Games before securing another bronze in the women’s team regu competition at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
India had topped Group A in the men’s quadrant event after winning all three matches. The team recorded a notable victory over World Cup champions Myanmar in the group stage and also defeated Vietnam and Laos to reach the semifinals.
India’s women’s quadrant campaign ended in the group stage after the team finished fourth in Group A without a win. The women’s doubles team also finished fourth in Group B, while the men’s regu team failed to reach the knockout stage after finishing third in Group B with one win and two defeats.
The bronze added to India’s medal tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. On Friday, Lovlina Borgohain won gold in the women’s 75kg boxing category, while India’s women’s recurve archery team also clinched gold after defeating South Korea.
India also secured silver medals in the recurve mixed team and men’s recurve team events, while Nethra Kumanan won bronze in the women’s dinghy event.
