Actress Rasika Dugal believes that exploring life’s complexities through a child’s perspective offers a special charm, as she reflected on her latest release, Little Thomas, and the value of simple, relatable storytelling in Hindi cinema.
Speaking about the film, Dugal said that while technological advancements have encouraged filmmakers to focus increasingly on scale and spectacle, the strength of an engaging story should not be overlooked.
“With all the possibilities that technology offers filmmakers today, there is understandably a lot of emphasis on scale and spectacle. But sometimes, in all of that, we forget the beauty of a story that is simple without being simplistic,” she said in a statement.
The actress praised director Kaushal Oza’s understated filmmaking style, saying his approach demonstrates that a film does not need a grand setting or a complicated plot to connect with audiences.
She added that stories rooted in everyday experiences and observations can often be among the most engaging.
In Little Thomas, a young boy’s curiosity about where babies come from and his desire for a sibling provide the starting point for a broader exploration of family relationships, childhood, marital ups and downs, and life in post-liberalisation India.
“I think there is something lovely about exploring all of this through a child’s perspective,” Dugal said, emphasising that children’s questions and curiosity should not be underestimated or dismissed.
She also expressed hope that filmmakers would continue to trust the strength of simple ideas and give everyday stories a place in cinema.
Directed by Oza and backed by Anurag Kashyap, Little Thomas also stars Gulshan Devaiah and Hridansh Parekh.
Set in 1990s Goa, the film follows seven-year-old Thomas and his family as they navigate life’s highs and lows. Its storytelling evokes the gentle, observational style associated with Malgudi Days and the works of Ruskin Bond.
