The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has welcomed the decision to award the 2029 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships to Amdavad, Gujarat, marking the first time India will host the global weightlifting competition.
The IWF confirmed Amdavad as the host city following a decision by its Executive Board on October 25 in Ningbo, China. The announcement adds another major international sporting event to India’s calendar and builds on Gujarat’s growing role in hosting global competitions.
Gandhinagar hosted the Asian Weightlifting Championships earlier in 2026, while Amdavad is also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The 2029 World Championships will give Indian fans an opportunity to watch leading international weightlifters compete on home soil.
IOA president Dr P.T. Usha described the hosting rights as a proud moment for Indian sport, saying the event would allow India to welcome athletes and supporters from around the world.
She highlighted the achievements of Indian weightlifters, including Olympic medallist and world champion Mirabai Chanu, and expressed hope that watching elite athletes compete in India would inspire more young people to take up the sport and aspire to international success.
Sahdev Yadav, president of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF), called the decision an important milestone for the sport in the country.
He said India had won 18 medals at the World Championships, including three world titles, and that hosting the 2029 edition would provide an opportunity to build on that record.
Yadav added that the competition would help strengthen weightlifting in India and give domestic athletes the experience of competing before a home crowd at the highest level.
The championships are expected to bring together leading weightlifters from across the world, placing India at the centre of the sport’s international calendar in 2029.
